Beer at midday and hit the hay

I should probably stop drinking beer at midday as in the heat of the summer all I want to do after drinking my carbs is to snooze. Lucky for me I managed to time my visit to Marienplatz with the sounding of the glockenspiel and the reenactment of a joust between Bavaria and Lothringen in honour of Duke Wilhelm V marriage to Renata of Lorraine which is then followed by the cooper’s dance to celebrate the end of the plague and finally the chiming of a golden rooster – inspiration unknown (at least to me). It’s hard to nod off to the sound of 43 bells ringing for fifteen minutes, in fact I may consider it a new alarm.

Weirdly, Marienplatz is the only place in Munich I remember visiting in 2012, the last time I set foot in continental Europe, and odder still I think I actually ate at the same restaurant. Creature of habit I guess.

I’d ventured to Marienplatz to find the Hugendubel which aside from a terrific word to say aloud is a multi-story bookstore. I was looking for the saga’s I’d learned about from my visit to the Neuschwanstein but alas they didn’t have any of the German fairytales in English – I even asked for a kids book being that’s about the extent of my German literacy (and even that’s a stretch) but to no avail. I will have to resort to the kindle library.

As this was my last day in Munich, I’d returned my beloved wheels to her home at MotorWorld a kind of utopia of supercars, espresso coffee, tattoo parlours and alternative clothes that I would gladly like to call home. If you’re hiring a car might I strongly recommend windshield and tyre insurance – a stone chip is very easy to come by and a windshield on the Porsche is about 2000 Euro. Money well spent as the only damage I had to report was a teeny tiny chip in the glass.

My only two tasks of the day complete I hopped on the U-bahn with the other commuters, doubled down on my midday beer and promptly fell asleep upon returning to corporate BNB. What can I say, not every day can be exciting.

Probably just as well the books weren’t available as you would have had to add them to your baggage.
